Louisville Festival Weather by Month: What to Pack and When to Worry

No.07Summer4 min read

Good to know

  • NOAA’s 1991-2020 normals for Louisville’s airport show July as the warmest month, with an average high of 89.0°F.
  • May is the wettest month at the airport, averaging 5.18 inches of rain.
  • KDF says highs on Thunder Over Louisville day have ranged from the mid-40s to the mid-80s.

Weather decides more Louisville festival days than any schedule does. A spring fireworks show can be a T-shirt evening or a winter-coat night. Outdoor theater in July pauses for lightning. December’s light show can mean snow. Knowing the normal range for each month helps you pack, choose your events and decide when to have a backup plan.

Spring: dress in layers

April and May are the heart of the Derby Festival, and they are also among the wettest months, with May averaging 5.18 inches of rain, the highest of the year. The Kentucky Derby Festival says highs on Thunder day have ranged from the mid-40s to the mid-80s and that it generally gets cooler at night, so it recommends a sweatshirt or jacket. For boaters, KDF adds that the river can be around 40 degrees in spring even when the air is warm.

Pack: a rain jacket, a warm layer for after dark, shoes that can handle wet grass.

Summer: heat and storms

June through August bring average highs in the upper 80s, with July the warmest at 89.0°F and lows that stay near 70. Rain arrives in summer storms rather than all-day drizzle. The Kentucky Shakespeare Festival’s policy shows how organizers handle it: decisions at 7:30 p.m., a 15-minute hold if rain starts, pauses for nearby lightning, and possible cancellations for extreme heat.

Pack: water, sunscreen, a hat, a light rain layer, and a plan for where to shelter if a storm comes through.

Tip: For evening events in July and August, arrive after the hottest part of the day if you can. Low temperatures still average around 70°F, so nights stay warm.

Fall: the sweet spot

September and October are the most comfortable festival months, with October averaging a high of 70.5°F and a low of 50.1°F. That is why the St. James Court Art Show on the first weekend of October and WorldFest on Labor Day weekend are such reliable outdoor events. Rain still averages more than 3.6 inches a month, and the art show says it runs rain or shine.

Pack: comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for evenings, a tote for purchases.

Winter: cold and sometimes snowy

December averages a high of 47.2°F and a low of 32.1°F, with 2.2 inches of snow on average. Light Up Louisville runs from mid-afternoon into the evening, so temperatures fall through the event.

Pack: a warm coat, hat and gloves, and boots if snow is forecast.

Rain plans for every season

Every month in the table averages more than 3 inches of rain, so a rain plan belongs in every festival day. Keep a compact umbrella or poncho in your bag, bring a plastic bag to sit on wet grass, and know where the nearest covered space is. Many organizers post weather decisions on social media, and for large events the National Weather Service forecast for Louisville is the best guide on the day.

Using normals wisely

Averages hide variety. A normal high of 69.6°F in April includes cold, wet days and warm, sunny ones. Use the table to set expectations, then check the National Weather Service forecast a few days ahead and again on the morning of the event. For the full year of events, see Louisville Festival Calendar by Month: The Whole Year at a Glance.

Weather and getting around

Bad weather changes how people travel. Rainy days put more cars on the road and fill garages faster. On storm-threat days, organizers may delay or cancel, and buses and roads can be affected. Keep an eye on organizer social media for each event, as Kentucky Shakespeare and the Derby Festival both post changes there, and check TARC rider alerts for detours.
