Good to know

  • Thunder Over Louisville is held two weeks before the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.
  • WorldFest takes place over Labor Day weekend on the Belvedere downtown.
  • The St. James Court Art Show is held on the first weekend of October.

Louisville’s festival year has a rhythm. Spring is the big one, built around the Kentucky Derby. Summer is long, warm and full of free evenings. Fall brings art and pumpkins. December ends the year with lights downtown. This calendar pulls the major events together, with dates drawn from the organizers’ own pages. Dates shift slightly from year to year, so always confirm with the organizer before you plan travel.

January to March: planning season

Winter is quiet for outdoor festivals, but it is when the spring season takes shape. The Kentucky Derby Festival’s 2027 Pegasus Parade applications ran from October 16, 2026, to January 12, 2027, with selected units notified in February. Kentucky Shakespeare said it would announce its 2027 plays on February 6. The Derby Festival’s free 15-week training program for its marathon and mini-marathon runs ahead of the spring races. January averages 4.5 inches of snow at the airport, according to NOAA.

April: Thunder and the Derby Festival

The Derby Festival opens with Thunder Over Louisville two weeks before the Derby, with an air show from about 3 p.m. and fireworks from 9:30 to 10 p.m. over the Ohio River. The weeks that follow bring balloons, bed races, concerts, races and more than 70 events in all. See Thunder Over Louisville: Fireworks, Air Show and How to Do the Day and The Kentucky Derby Festival: Louisville’s Spring Season Explained.

May: Derby week and the start of Shakespeare

The Pegasus Parade on Broadway kicks off Derby week; for 2027 it is set for Sunday, April 25, at 3 p.m. The Great Steamboat Race runs on the river, and the Kentucky Derby is on the first Saturday in May, which is May 1 in 2027. On May 26, 2027, Kentucky Shakespeare plans to open its 67th free season in Central Park. May is the wettest month, averaging 5.18 inches of rain.

September: WorldFest

Labor Day weekend brings WorldFest, a free four-day international festival on the Belvedere downtown, with three stages, nearly 150 vendors and the Parade of Cultures. In 2026 it ran September 4 to 7. See WorldFest Louisville: A Free International Festival on Labor Day Weekend.

October: art and pumpkins

The St. James Court Art Show fills Old Louisville on the first weekend of October, Friday to Sunday, with over 600 juried artists and free admission. From October 1, Jack’s Lantern Trail lights up Iroquois Park nightly through November 1, as it did in 2026. November: a pause

After the pumpkin trail closes on November 1, the calendar is quieter until the holidays. It is a good month to book spring travel, since hotels fill early for Derby season, and to check which spring events have opened registration. The Derby Festival opened registration for its 2027 cycling event on October 6, 2026, and parade applications on October 16.

December: Light Up Louisville

The city’s holiday kickoff downtown runs from mid-afternoon to evening, with a light show on Metro Hall, a parade at 6 p.m. and Santa. The city lists it for Saturday, December 5, 2026, 3 to 9 p.m., at Jefferson Square Park. See Louisville Holiday Events: Light Up Louisville and a Downtown Winter Evening.

How to use this calendar

Start with the fixed points. The Derby is always on the first Saturday in May, so Thunder and the Derby Festival can be planned a year ahead. WorldFest is tied to Labor Day weekend, and the St. James Court Art Show to the first weekend of October. Shakespeare and the pumpkin trail announce their exact dates each year, and Light Up Louisville is set by the city each fall. With those anchors in place, you can sketch a festival year in a few minutes.

Not on this list

Louisville has many more neighborhood fairs, food festivals, concerts and sporting events than one calendar can hold. Louisville Tourism publishes an events calendar and a list of annual festivals and events. The Kentucky State Fair is another major late-summer event; check its official site for each year’s dates.

Tip: Make a simple year plan: mark Thunder, Derby week, a Shakespeare night, WorldFest, the art show weekend and Light Up Louisville on your calendar as soon as dates are announced. Then fill the gaps with smaller events as you hear about them.

Weather through the year

Each season has its own packing list, from rain jackets in spring to sun hats in July and gloves in December. Louisville Festival Weather by Month: What to Pack and When to Worry has the month-by-month averages and tips.
