Good to know

  • The 2027 Kentucky Shakespeare Festival is scheduled for May 26 to August 8, 2027, its 67th season.
  • There are no tickets or reservations and no cost for admission, according to Kentucky Shakespeare.
  • The 2026 season featured fifty-five performances of five productions over eleven weeks.

Few summer traditions in Louisville are as easy to enjoy as this one. Bring a blanket to Central Park on a warm evening, find a spot on the lawn, and watch professional actors perform Shakespeare under the trees, free. The Kentucky Shakespeare Festival calls itself the Official Shakespeare Festival of the Commonwealth, and it has been part of the city’s summers for more than sixty years.

The 2027 season

Kentucky Shakespeare says its 67th season will run May 26 to August 8, 2027, in Central Park in Historic Old Louisville. The organization says the season’s plays will be announced on February 6 at its annual gala.

For a sense of scale, the 2026 season ran May 27 to August 9, 2026. The producing artistic director described it as an eleven-week season with fifty-five performances and five productions, all free. It included three main-stage plays, a production by the festival’s training program for high school students, and a Shakespeare-inspired dance piece by Louisville Ballet in the final week. Two weeks in July ran in rotating repertory, with all three main-stage productions alternating nightly.

Where it is

Performances are held at the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater in Central Park, at the corner of Fourth Street and Magnolia Avenue, in the heart of Old Louisville’s historic preservation district. The amphitheater has permanent bench seating, open spaces in front and behind for portable chairs and blankets, lawn on both sides, and picnic tables at the rear.

A typical evening

TimeWhat happens
6:00 p.m.Food trucks open
7:00 p.m.Bar opens; free Kids’ Globe arts tent opens
7:15 p.m.Community pre-show performance
8:00 p.m.Main-stage performance begins
About 9:00 p.m.Intermission
10:00 to 10:30 p.m.Performance ends

These times come from the festival’s visitor information. Productions run about 2 hours plus a 15-to-20-minute intermission.

What it costs

Nothing. Kentucky Shakespeare says there are no tickets or reservations and no cost for admission. All seats are first come, first served. Company members collect donations at intermission, and you can donate at the gift shop or online; that is how the organization keeps the festival free.

Food and drink

Food trucks from the local food truck association are in the park nightly from 6 p.m. until just after intermission. You are welcome to bring your own picnic. Drinks are sold at the festival’s bar until the end of intermission, but the festival says no outside alcohol is permitted because of liquor license rules, and drinks cannot be carried out of the amphitheater perimeter.

Tip: Arrive by 7 p.m. on a weekend if you want a bench seat or a good spot near the front of the lawn. Early arrivals get the pick of the space and time to eat before the show.

Parking and getting there

The festival says street parking is available around the park on Fourth Street, Magnolia Avenue, Sixth Street and Park Avenue; do not park in front of bus stop signs. There is a lot with about 40 spaces behind the Old Louisville Visitors Center, entered from the drive on Magnolia near Sixth Street, and a limited number of accessible spaces near the playground. As a courtesy to neighbors, the festival asks visitors to park on the park side of the surrounding streets first.

Weather rules

Summer evenings in Louisville can bring storms. The festival’s policy:

  • Weather decisions and announcements are made at 7:30 p.m. unless there are extenuating circumstances.
  • If rain starts during a show, there is a 15-minute hold before staff decide whether to continue.
  • Lightning nearby can pause the performance.
  • Performances may be canceled or delayed because of extreme heat.
  • In severe weather, the audience is told to leave the park immediately.

Cancellations are posted in the park and on the festival’s social media. NOAA normals for Louisville’s airport show July highs averaging 89.0°F; see Louisville Festival Weather by Month: What to Pack and When to Worry.

Accessibility

Kentucky Shakespeare lists accessible ramps, parking, restrooms and wheelchair seating, ASL interpretation at selected performances, large-print programs, noise-canceling headphones and sensory items, a sensory guide, and pre-show tactile tours for visually impaired guests with advance notice.

Families and pets

The festival describes itself as family-friendly, while noting that individual plays can include mature content; it publishes content notes for each production. Pets on leashes are welcome, and the festival asks owners to sit at the back picnic tables or in designated side or back grass areas.

Fitting it into a summer calendar

The festival’s long season means you can go on a weeknight when the lawn is quieter, or catch a different play each week during rotating repertory. Pair it with an Old Louisville walk; the neighborhood also hosts the St. James Court Art Show in October, described in St. James Court Art Show: Old Louisville’s Fall Weekend of Fine Art.
